Letter to Governor Brown

Governor Brown,

Just because you’re between a rock & a hard spot doesn’t mean you will be allowed to make your bed with the money interests & compromise the body of the rest of the world by accepting the suggestion of those who insist we need nuclear power plants.

Your excuses mean nothing, and there are five thousand women who, if threatened enough will show you what motherhood means. Do you understand me?

WE DO NOT NEED NUCLEAR POWER. We need clean air, water & land. We need the OZONE & the SUN. We need to legislate with only the BALANCE OF EARTH in mind.

There are thousands of jobs that NEED to be done & they don’t involve RADIOACTIVE WASTE.

You are not showing wisdom as California’s leading example. Your plans are not based on an overall knowing, nor do they reflect a will to live. You are pushed by fringe constituents that have the rest of the people bound & gagged with money.

We are not interested in money. We want the good life it is supposed to buy. If you are not bright enough to see there IS a workable alternative to Nuclear Power your name will be—Plutonum & you will need to be buried for the next hundred years.

Lynette A. Fromme

P.S.

My strength is in this letter of conviction. If I could lay on my face before you, & beg, if it would move you to stop, I would. But your own lord hangs before you on a cross to say the very same thing. He already died to save it. He’s not going to die forever.

August 2, 1975

Dear Mr. Rossie,

A year ago you wrote Charles Manson asking if you might interview him at Folsom prison. He sent the letters to us.

I am enclosing a double sided statement concerning both Nixon and what will happen to Los Angeles, even as I find it unlikely that you will use or pass this grim warning.

I am certain that you could find in history men with as strange and mystical, individual and yet all-encompassing qualities as Manson, if one could only think to compare. A braver (real) man would take a good long look at a phenomenon to see not what others think or fear about it—but WHAT IS. This is difficult for the schooled mind to see, and you are to be respected for trying, not by me or anyone, but by yourself.

Through the images set out for us by the unknown called leaders with enough financial backing to take a step forward/whip-lashing suddenly at that certain point in time when fashion swung to the revolution—the American mind is left blocked by dozens of already tried solutions, to the OVERALL problems, that have fizzled. Nevertheless, the thoughts are still moving.

It was not people that the Manson Family was at war with, but a thought. The same thought sells our children and our more important world sex, political ideology, death, theology, and toothpaste in one hour. As a member of the media, it is your responsibility to take into consideration the thoughts that the Manson Family has presented to you. We will not, for the sake of drama, and an old school of thought where the misery needs company and the subtitles of emotions and treasures of a writer’s hard work, accept Tennessee Williams for lifestyle. To perpetuate what is dead is killing the rest. There is—around the corner of evolution—a new experience, awareness and perception beyond anything we have yet experienced—and this itself is so feared that it has been locked up. The death of an old thought is the completion of a long line of grandmother’s ways, and hard for most to let go of.

The media CAN be used to unwind the tangles of a world running in circles toward what it fears most.

Manson can explain the self destructive thought. He can explain the Christ thought.

Without personal meanness, I say that YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND THE MIND OF THE WORLD into which you pass THOUGHTS. The leaders who have held the people down in order to control have fallen off the top and as the people are waking to the lie, in anger, they will tear the world apart with no new purpose to live. With the media, each new home can learn a garden, and woman can be shown not as a whore or a neuter computer, but as a mother who WANTS TO LIVE AND IS DOING EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN TO INSURE [sic] THE SURVIVAL OF HER WORLD. YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THE CHRIST THOUGHT FIRST. I CANNOT EXPLAIN IT, BUT IT WOULD FASCINATE YOU! LOVE IN TRUTH IS WORSHIP—AND BEGINS WITH WORSHIP OF THE EARTH WE WALK ON, THE AIR WE BREATHE, THE WATER WE DRINK AND SO ON. THE COUNTRY HAS THE RESOURCES AND THE YOUNG AND OLD ENERGY ALIKE TO CLEAN IT UP AND PROVIDE NEW PURPOSE FOR LIVING, NEW THOUGHTS THAT SEND A MIND SPIRALING UPWARD AND OUTWARD, NOT INTO THE DRUG STORES, BOOZE BOTTLES AND MORGUES.

BUT WILL THE TATE-LABIANCA MURDERS NEED TO BE REPEATED TO TELL THE TRUTH OF THE THOUGHTS WE HAVE BEEN RAISED INTO? OR WILL THE PEOPLE FINALLY SEE THAT THEY ARE BEING KILLED BY BIG MONEY AND THE THOUGHTS THAT ARE PEPPER IT AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE NEW YOUNG GOVERNMENT OF THE WORLD? WILL THERE BE BLOOD IN THE FACES OF OUR WORKING PEOPLE, OR WILL TWENTY MILLION MOTHER BEARS ARISE TO PROTECT THEIR CUBS?

WOMAN WILL NEED TO SIT DOWN WITH HER MEN AND UNDERSTAND THEM AS PARTS OF HERSELF. TO COMPETE WITH EACH OTHER IS TO CREATE CONFLICT IN THE KIDS AND LEAVE THE REAL PROBLEMS OF NO PLACE TO PLAY, NO TREES, BAD AIR, WATER, AND CANCER CAUSING FOODS—ON THE SIDEWALKS WITH THE TWELVE AND THIRTEEN YEAR OLDS WHO LEARNED IN THEIR DOPE PREVENTION CLASS HOW NOT TO SHOOT DOPE AND ARE LAUGHING ABOUT IT WITH NEEDLES IN THEIR ARMS.

HOW MANY OF OUR KIDS WENT TO THE NUT HOUSES ACROSS THE COUNTRY JUST BECAUSE THEY SAW THE CONCRETE BILLBOARD CANCER REALITY KILLING THE WORLD AND THEY COULD NOT COPE? WOULD YOU OR I GIVE UP OUR LIVES TO STOP THE WORLD FROM BURNING? THINK ABOUT IT.

CHARLES MANSON, BRUCE DAVIS, STEVE GROGAN, ROBERT BEAUSOLEIL, CHARLES WATSON, PATRICIA KRENWINKLE [sic], LESLIE VAN HOUTEN AND SUSAN ATKINS DID. PUT NIXON AND THE POPE IN A COURT ROOM WITH MANSON AND FAMILY AND WE WILL SEE WHAT HAS BEEN RUNNING OUR IGNORANCES, WHAT TRUTH HAS BEEN KEPT IN CLOSETS. AND WE WHO ARE THE REAL SERVANTS OF THE PEOPLE AND EARTH.

THE TRUTH IS AS BAD AS IT IS GOOD. MANSON CAN EXPLAIN IT. IF NOT ALLOWED TO EXPLAIN, THERE WILL BE MANY MORE YOUNG MURDERERS, BEGINNING WITH THE PERSON TYPING THIS LETTER. YOU DO NOT REALIZE ALL THE THOUGHTS THAT ARE MOVING IN THE MINDS OF NOT ONLY THIS COUNTRY, BUT THE WORLD. MANSON HAS BEEN THINKING THROUGH THE WORLD FOR FIVE YEARS IN THAT CLOSET. HE HAS BEEN UNDER THE SUN THREE TIMES IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS. FOR THOSE OF US OUTSIDE TO IMAGINE THIS WOULD BE HARD. WHAT MAN COULD BE IN A CELL WITH NOTHING TO DO AND ALL THE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS OF THE WORLD ON HIS BACK, WITH EVERY REACH OF COMPETITION TRYING WITH SHARP NAILS TO PICK HIS BRAIN, AND DOWN HIM, SO THAT THEY, HIM, HER, MS., IT CAN BE HIM—WHAT MAN OF CLEAR AWARENESS AND PERCEPTION OF THOUGHTS BEYOND MOST MEN’S MINDS, PAST OR PRESENT, COULD KNOW WHAT PEOPLE ARE REALLY THINKING, ACCEPT THEM WITHOUT JUDGMENT, YET REFLECT THEIR OWN JUDGMENTS OF THEMSELVES IN TRUTH FOR THEIR OWN BALANCE AND SIGHT, OFTEN TO HIS OWN DETREMENT? IT IS AN EXCEPTIONAL MAN WHO TELLS IS THE TRUTH THAT OTHERS DO NOT WANT US TO HEAR. THOSE OF US NOT EXCEPTIONAL, CAUGHT UP IN FOOLISH FORMALITIES SIGNIFYING NOTHING, MAY LEARN TO FACE OURSELVES THROUGH HIM—BUT ONLY WHILE HE LIVES. IF HE DIES, THE TRUTH ALONG WITH HIM DIES. THERE ARE MANY CHILDREN WITH KNIVES WHO LOVE THE EARTH AND PUT THEIR VERY LIVES ON HIS NAME, PLEDGING NOT TO ALLOW THIS.

THE ALWAYS NICE FACE WILL NOT GIVE YOU THE MEANNESS THAT MAY RAISE YOUR STRENGTH AND HELP YOU TO SURVIVE. THE GIFT OF THE MEAN, HARD TRUTH CAN SAVE LIVES IF WE BUT ACCEPT IT AS A PART OF THE THOUGHTS THAT ARE MOVING. IF NOT IT IS BLOODY BEDROOMS AND SCREAMS IN THE NIGHT, UNANSWERED. AS IS, YOU ARE MAKING MURDERERS FOR THE SPRAY CAN COMPANY THAT IS GOING TO KILL US IF SOMEBODY DOES NOT GET ALPLANALP AND HIS CRIME PARTNERS FIRST.

IF NIXON CAN STEAL THE COUNTRY, AND SELL IT OUT THE BACK DOOR WHILE THE C.I.A. TRACKS BLOOD ALL OVER THE WORLD AND THE POPE SHAKES HANDS ON THE DEAL—WHAT IS JOE GONZALES DOING IN JAIL FOR STEALING BREAD? WHY IS GEORGE BROWN GOING TO PRISON FOR DOPE? WHY DID SYLVIA KILL HER MOTHER? WHY DID PAT KRENWINKLE [sic], LESLIE VAN HOUTEN, SUSAN ATKINS, CHARLES WATSON, ROBERT BEAUSOLEIL, STEPHEN GROGAN [sic], AND BRUCE DAVIS KILL NINE PEOPLE? WHY DID CHARLES MANSON GET LIFE IN PRISON FOR TELLING THE TRUTH? MANSON CAN EXPLAIN IT. IN A COURT ROOM WITH NIXON, AND THE POPE—THE WORLD WOULD KNOW WHY.

Lyn Fromme

P.S. C.M. could have gotten out if he would have lied. He doesn’t lie. Bugliosi on the other hand lies and makes thousands of dollars, while campaigning on T.V. shows and saying that Charles Manson is at home in prison, having a great time playing his guitar and he’s queer anyway. (Sixteen to twenty women should surely testitfy to that.)

Sandra and myself would like to sit down next to Bugliosi on one of his talk shows, under the right circumstances. Why don’t you give me your thoughts on the best spot for this. I felt that CBS would be the most fair in the editing room. We do not know the various shows where such a confrontation would be possible.

Hello
It feels good knowing how much you love. It doesn’t matter how much fighting goes on all around you. All you need is the love I know you have just by your letters it’s apparent how much you see. Why don’t you send a picture of yourself and we’ll give it to Charlie. Charlie and the girls are starting trial Monday. It’s going to be a long summer with a lot of confusion, but if you’re strong you’ll be able to make it to the desert. If you can get a copy of Rolling Stone Magazine it has a lot of silly people’s intellectual opinions and how they see themselves through us but if you weed through it you can see that some of our quotes come through.
We loves ya and know we’ll all be together sooner than soon

We are with you, as ever & we patiently await the springing of Charlie. He sends his love but can’t write since his mail doesn’t get out. I have your old letters.
How strong are you?
Do you have a pair of good shoes, a warm coat or cape you could sleep in, a knife & a small pack? Are you ready to survive?
What’s happening at your house with your parents—school etc.?
Where are you going & what are you now doing—whatever happens?
That’s good. The time of notime comes soon.

You are a super star—
Showed Charlie your picture

Everything we’re making good
Home is heaven in the wood—
& we make the best of cities
scornful faces—opinions, pities,
None of which have any matter
& we sing & let the clatter
rumble with itself.

I’m gonna try to get some good pictures of Charlie for you
It feels so good to lay down
Do you sew? Will you send us bits of you?—bit or word will do—even none is still a whole cause we feel you with us—soul
You’re beautiful—and you’re not ashamed of being beautiful—which is what we’re taught to be—
You’re a princess— & pretty soon we’ll be able to make our world the heaven it should be
A lot of people need to wake up
& when they do—they’ll see us.
Will, & always have been in, above, & under all else—
in constant
communication

I love you
Squeeky
& all

It’s very funny—that so few people can accept love— & to find someone who can—is to find someone who gives it so much—
so much I laugh
& cry all at once.

Statement

Statement from Lynette Fromme

There were many women around. We all had a relationship with each other that was very strong. And all of our minds kind of hooked up. We rejected the society. We rejected marriage because we didn’t like what our parents had. We looked at our parents’ marriages and we said “You know, if I’m going to say I pledge my life to you till death, then I’m not going to leave.” We rejected paying taxes when we didn’t know where those tax dollars were going. We wanted to know what is it being used for? I know lots of young people felt that way. They wanted to know what is this war for?

When the circumstances are right, everything becomes a dance. And then, there’s this communication that happens on earth between the animals and the people. And when you’re in the woods, when you’re some place like the redwoods— when you are in the presence of a thousand year old, or three thousand year old tree that’s as big as a house, it puts you in your place. When it came to animals, he wanted to know “What are you and what do you do? He didn’t say those words, but more or less, he looked at each animal as an interesting creature and he wanted to know how it lived and what it was here for. And everything has that purpose, that nice, circular balance of plant life, of animal life. We have a planet that needs all the help it can get and people are not number one, you know.

I wanted a courtroom. I wanted to put my people in court and let them say what they did. Bugliosi, the district attorney on the Tate-LaBianca cases, had put out a book. There were a lot of falsehoods in that book and it was a distorted view of our purposes, helter skelter and all… wanting to start a race war—that’s a joke. A race war’s been coming for years and years. So for them to put it all on Manson is criminal. But the other people, the other races of people know. And all that I say, with regard to that, is I believe it’s natural. I believe that it is natural to like yourself, to look to others that look like you. And it’s good. Other races should not be looking to white people for images.

I have no respect for people who don’t have respect for what gives them life. And that’s earth. You know, earth first. That’s Manson’s first woman.

He can get right up to you and affect you in a way that maybe you’ve never been affected before. Because he can scare the shit out of you, turn around, walk away, and turn back and be somebody else. And he can show you a way to become connected with birds and animals and trees and things like that. He shows you by his actions. He doesn’t tell you. He doesn’t preach it. He wasn’t a preacher. He didn’t teach us these things. He just lived them . And that was more than we had seen from anyone else. And as far as leaders go, I’ll go with that, you know. He didn’t ask me to call him God. We thought that was really funny. You think we’d be with somebody we had to call God?

People want evil. In order for there to be a good, there has to be evil. People want it. I don’t happen to need scary things chasing me around. I don’t want my dreams full of that. I want to see what’s here. I want to discover the country. I want to take a look at it.

…. it was a unanimous type of a decision. And it was… we didn’t vote on it or anything. We had become one mind. And it wasn’t Manson’s mind . We had become another, something that goes beyond the individual, I don’t know what to call it.

And I will explain that this way. I picked up a pair of scissors in the ranch house and I’m thinking “I don’t need these” so I put them down. I walk in circles. Finally, I pick up the scissors and leave. And I get down where the movie set is and one of the girls stepped out of a saloon. She said, “Thank you”. It was not abnormal for us to understand and know each other’s thoughts from a distance. Then we realized this is what human beings can do. All of us, you know. And we weren’t sure we were worthy of it. And we had to deal with religion and you know, were we worthy, Religions teach otherwise. Well, why not? What else would God have us be but worthy? So then, to accept this and to go on, we saw so many things that I don’t talk about them.

He can dance. He likes to dance. And it comes from feeling. And if he touches you, then it spreads. And then, people start behaving differently . And they become more, I guess, just poised.

I think it’s coming back around again. I think kids are dissatisfied and they’re… they all, kids are always dissatisfied, but I think that they’re coming back to natural things again, It’s hard because half of it’s been taken away from you already. Kids tell me all the time, “Well, you know, it may not be here by the time I’m an adult” They say, “I don’t know if I’m gonna have children or not.” We’re a continuum. As human beings, we’ re supposed to see into the future. When you hear those Indians down in Brazil talking about their kids and their grandkids, it’s warming. I want them to win. I don’t want them to be slaughtered. I want them to win.

I was sitting behind lots and lots of people when Charlie walked into the courtroom and he was asking the judge to be able to retain his voice. He wanted to defend himself and not have someone else up there talking for him who didn’t know him. And the people were wanting to see what he was about, what he had to say. They were on the edge of the seats, and the reporters were writing down things and suddenly, very suddenly, the judge banged the gavel and he said, “This is my courtroom, Mr. Manson, and I make the rules here.” And it was obviously an attempt to gain back the attention of the people ’cause everybody jumped. Everybody felt like they had been reprimanded . And that’s supposed to be the “big dad” up there. I’ll give him that respect if he gives my land and water and air that respect. I mean, there should be judges, like Solomon, wise people to be in the middle of disputes. But don’t take my attention and then just point me toward money and tell me that’s the only thing that’s right.

I mean, when people kill, they have to be willing to be killed. And the women involved in this, and the men at the time, they were. They were. So whatever they say about Charlie, it can be a reaction to something. I don’t know. They are under much more pressure than I have ever been.

I just know that there are a lot of young people who want to follow him, so they follow what they read in the books. It’s not right. We didn’t take heroin. No way. You won’t get me to touch that. Or Cocaine. And I’ve had to write letters to young people saying we didn’t do that because they wrote me and they tell me, “Yeah, it’s cool. I take these drugs and all. . . ”

How could you let an elephant be extinct? How could we allow elephants to be taken off the earth? We can’t do that.

Open

Open Letter from Lynette Fromme

He has been requesting a tape recorder since he was first incarcerated in 1969. That is the only way that any of us can get a clear picture of MANSON and what he has to say. His sight and awareness is and has always been far ahead of mass consciousness, and for this he, like many KNOWN historical geniuses, is forced to suffer for what others do not understand. He broke NO LAW! Imagine how it feels to be living under all the people who are free to walk, swim, and fly the space, but do not know how to keep it free, clean and in balance. Let me put that another way. Say you have been sitting for thirty years thinking through a problem—not necessarily straining, but concentrating diligently on not what you want or hope for, but what IS.

Say that you have come to understand the problem in depth and have, in effect, become it, and know how solve the problem. Now you watch the parades and processions of hopeful and despairing people walking outside your tomb. They are all looking for the answer to the problem you know so well. They are all celebrating the search, or mourning the problem, analyzing or disguising it. You wave but they don’t look to see you, even as they proceed by to their own funerals. When you have exhausted yourself yelling, and felt the deaths of millions for not having heard, and watched those who think they are too good to look at you, push their own children in the graves before them, and watched the children grow angrier, the land more destroyed, the air and water more poisoned, the men, women, politicians and gurus vying for positions of power over something rather than the God-given grace to love and care for what supports life—and much more sight than I could ever write on paper—then you see what Charles Manson sees, alone. Everyone in this family put our life’s faith there.

The balance of the Christian mind is different than that of the Hindu.

You say that you are impressed that I am articulate. Every one in this family is articulate, and exceptionally bright. Reports to the contrary are part of a people’s need to look down on something and someone, be it a criminal, a different class or race of people, or a simple child. It is also a result of the standard of sophistication measured by one’s ambition and finesse for acquiring money. The murders themselves were mean and purposeful. They were respondent. They needed not be sensationalized. But rather than listening to the defendants themselves, lies, distortion, perversion and other of the public’s own cravings were substituted for the truth. At that time they were forced to accept attorneys as if they were forced to wear disguises. They were forced to remain silent while a parade of charaders marched around the courtroom talking about things they little understood—The Bible, sex orgies, Christ and the Devil, LSD, E.S.P., the “Manson Family” and the murders themselves. The Supreme Court later handed down a decision interpreting the U.S. Constitution as giving defendants the undeniable right to represent themselves in court as long as they conduct themselves within a reasonable accordance of court procedure.

When I say they were “forced”, I mean that they were required, and under that requirement in a situation determining the balance of their lives and the lives of many others, there was a tremendous amount of pressure. I do not appreciate crying injustices and dramatizing much of what the soft American public consider to be hardships. At the same time, I can empathize.

While sympathy toward a problem can often make weakness, empathy can call up strength. The public here could not even face their own children, let alone empathize with them. They did not even ask to understand the young people in the so-called “Manson Family” who they were sending to the gas chamber. Rather, they blamed one man who was not even raised in the society which fostered those killings.

I walked out of my trial; Sandra Good and Susan Murphy walked out of their trial; we did not put on our defenses because until all the family gets a chance to explain, none of us will. As a family, we can see a new money system where the money can work like a god for the people rather than people working like dogs for the money and not receiving the balance of healthful, experience-full life that the money exchange is supposed to buy.

Until then, this country runs itself to the ground from what it refuses to face; just as you, yourself, can see no solution to WORLD problems and can see no one who does see. When Nixon points a gun at Ford, someone may see that Manson’s mind is miles over the U.N. and Rome, and that the United States Government has been sold nine times already.

I could take more time with this letter to be academic but that is not my concern. From what I have seen, most journalists would sell their own Lord’s or child’s heartbeat rather than come down to the love and soul in themselves, rather than getting on your knees to another of your own mankind, rather than conceding that you don’t really know the connection between life and Death and why people are intent in moving toward self- destruction in their air, water, land, food and thoughts. It is by no means only journalists and media people who demonstrate this, and I am not condemning you. Everyone has done that for themselves.

Letter I

Charlie (Manson) gave us your letter. He loves you too.
The people don’t want to find him innocent. He is their “Hippie” to show the world what they want to do with hippies.
Charlie is young & old all at once…. & we know age means nothing … in fact nothing means anything but love. Love’s what makes you feel good … & to love all you’d feel perfect … but older people are afraid of feeling good … they think you aren’t supposed to feel good all the time & that people who have a good time rather than work at jobs are “bad.” Most older people don’t understand what love is.
But you need not get old. This we know. Your love keeps you young … & you have much love, in fact that’s what you are.
It’s up to us who love Charlie to get him out…
by thinking it & doing whatever it takes.
He is the one who will set all love free … for it is hiding—and pushed down by those who fight wars and hunt animals, and cut down trees.
It’s time for all love to stand and show itself…
As you do when you write & tell us of yourself. You recognize Charlie … you see his innocence. He is all love … every kind of creature imaginable … and more gentle & beautiful than any man I’ve ever seen ever.

& they want to crucify him…
again!

They have no eyes … those people. But the thing to do is to keep loving … for LOVE takes care of everything. Charlie has known that for a long time … & he has shown each of us … just by watching him everyday. He is a King to us … for he’s made each of us Kings & Queens.
We live in a very magic world … everyone does … but not everyone knows it!
You are a strong girl … with a lot of faith in yourself. Know that … no matter what anyone says. Write to us. & You are in “the family” if you love.
YOU’RE ALL NEW LIFE…
GETTING READY FOR A NEW WORLD.

LOVE, ALL OF US & SQUEAKY (PARTS OF CHARLIE)

Keerdoja

From Newsweek, November 8, 1976:
Squeaky and Sara Jane

EILEEN KEERDOJA with bureau reports

On Sept. 5, 1975, one of cult murderer Charles Manson’s female disciples aimed a .45-caliber pistol at President Ford outside the Statehouse in Sacramento, Calif., and pulled the trigger. Fortunately, though there were four bullets in the clip, the firing chamber was empty. Secret Service men pounced on Lynette (Squeaky) Fromme. But barely two weeks later, on another Presidential visits to California, another woman—a quasi-radical bookkeeper who had once served as an FBI informant—also waited in ambush with a concealed handgun. As Ford strode from a San Francisco hotel to his waiting limousine, Sara Jane Moore fired a single wild shot before being disarmed and seized.

Within four months, both Fromme and Moore had been tried, convicted and sentenced to life terms for their assassination attempts. The following reports are based on interviews with prison officials and caseworkers; Sara Jane Moore was interviewed in prison by Janet Huck, but Lynette Fromme declined NEWSWEEK’s request for an interview. Squeaky Fromme, who recently turned 28, has been serving her sentence at the San Diego Metropolitan Correctional Center, a modern Federal prison overlooking San Diego Bay.The lobby is decorated with plants and colorful graphics, and only a walk-through metal detector reminds visitors that this is the entrance to a prison and not some handsomely furnished office building. Prisoner Fromme occupies an uncarpeted 8-foot by 12-foot cell with a barless but escape-proof window – a floor-to-ceiling slit 5 inches wide. Along with her fellow inmates, she wears a pants outfit with a choice of bouses – one which is a Bicentennial print adorned with Liberty Bells, Revolutionary War soldiers and fife-and-drum bandsmen.

Mall Threats: In her job as a prison orderly, Fromme scrubs and waxes floors and dusts cells seven hours a day, earning 50 cents an hour. She spends a good deal of her free time writing long letters – as many as ten a day, all in longhand. All her mail is screened by prison censors because – as the prison authorities discovered by way of phone calls from the FBI and worried recipients of Squeaky’s letters – she is in the habit of writing threats to executives of the Environmental Protection Agency and other organizations that, in her view, are not doing enough to curb pollution. Ecology is her favorite cause, but only one of several issues that Fromme reads about intently in newspapers and magazines. Says Jack Shuk, one of her caseworkers: “She is provoked by what she reads, but doesn’t really appear to have any indept knowledge of the subjects.” One of her protests, however, came from an insiders’s viewpoint: after the movie “Helter Skelter” was shown at the prison last April, Fromme called the local newspapers – collect – to complain about its depiction of Manson.

Unlike Squeaky Fromme, who is described by another inmate as withdrawn and something of a loner, Sara Jane Moore has established herself as a joiner and activist in confinement. As a highrisk prisoner at the Terminal Island Federal Correctional Institution in Los Angeles, she is not housed in the main women’s compound but in a 5-foot by 8-foot cell in a separate dormitory used chiefly to house incoming prisoners. At first, she told interviewer Huck, “all we could do was stay inside that hole or go outside during the day and sit on a bench next to the building.” in March, Moore staged a one-woman strike, refusing to perform her assigned chores and posting a manifesto on her cell-block wall. Prison officials gave in to the extent of allowing the women in the dorm to walk in the courtyard, sit on the grass and even play miniature golf.

Activities: Moore then returned to work but was transferred at her own request from a typing stint in the prison’s business office to a job in the kitchen. She began by mopping floors and wiping tables, graduated to the cary squad that delivers tryas to shut-ins, then became a member of the cook’s crew. it is a twelve-hour day in the kitchen, but Moore gets every other day off. She has enough leftover energy for such leisure-time activities as jogging, attending a creative-writing course and a theater workshop and reading a left-to-right range of magazines from the Peking Review to U.S. News & World Report. As an editor of Terminal Island’s prison newspaper, the T.I. News, she revamped the women’s page, cutting down on inmate-romance items and installing a logo that shows a clenched-fist symbol. Under her byline of Sally Moore, She has written features and news articles, including an obituary of black singer Paul Robeson.

Moore disclaimed any regrets about her attempt to shoot the President: “I do regret I didn’t succeed, and allow the winds of change to start. I wish I had killed him. I did it to creat chaos.” Eventually, she said, she will write a book explaining her attempt: “Nobody is under any obligation to read it. But for my beliefs, I have given up my life.” Like Squeaky Fromme, Sally Moore, now 46, will be eligible for parole after serving ten years – but she expects to be in prison far longer than the minimum stretch. “That question is like a knife in my gut,” she said when asked about her parole prospects. “The won’t let me out until I’m a little old lady.”
