Panel Receives Manson Letter

From the Los Angeles Times, September 6, 1975:

Panel Receives Manson Letter

SACRAMENTO (UPI)—Members of the Assembly Criminal Justice Committee recieved a rambling letter signed by cult leader Charles Manson 24 hours before one of his followers tried to kill President Ford.

The typed, three-page letter was dated Aug. 23 and carried a Tamil, Calif., return address. Tamil is the site of San Quentin Prison where Manson is serving a murder sentence.

The letter, addressed to “Criminal Justice Committee”, contained no direct threat against Mr. Ford.

Manson’s name contained no handwritten signature but was typed “C. Manson.”

“I’ve told you people over and over—I can release thoughts that will destroy you,” the letter said.

“The working people, I can understand,” it continued. “But you lawyers, drunk with the blood of dummies like me, are in trouble. You best be thinking on how to save your lives because the other justice is gonna catch up with you.

From the Los Angeles Times, September 6, 1975:

“Squeaky” Has History of Trouble With Law

By Gene Blake
Times Legal Affairs Writer

Lynette Alice (Squeaky) Fromme, thwarted Friday in an assassination attempt on President Ford, was a familiar figure at the 1970 Los Angeles murder trial for her idol—Charles Manson.

She was one of several Manson “family” members who kept a vigil outside the Hall of Justice, vowing to wait until their “father” was released. Each carried a sheathed knife in plain view.

And their foreheads were scratched with an “X”, following the lead of Manson, who had appeared similarly branded in court. He explained he was “X-ing myself out of the world”.

It became a ritual for new disciples joining the group—even to tasting the blood as it ran down their faces.

Although unofficial family leader while the “father” was in jail, Fromme had not been charged in the seven Tate-LaBianca murders for which Manson and three of his other girls were convicted.

But she managed to get in plenty of other trouble with the law—a point raised Friday by Atty. Gen. Evelle J. Younger. Nevertheless, her name never came to the attention of the Secret Service.

“You and I know she has been a problem for law enforcement for a long time,” Younger said.

Asked how Friday’s incident could happen when law enforcement officers knew of Fromme’s proclivities and anti-Establishment behavior, Younger replied: “I don’t know—but I’m going to find out.”

Fromme, now 26, was among six Manson family members arrested during the 1970 murder trial on charges of loitering, endangering public safety and failing to identify themselves in connection with their sidewalk vigil.

After warnings or at most a few days in jail, they were back at their old stand at N. Broadway and Temple St. and police finally let them alone.

Later, Fromme was one of the five Manson followers indicted on charges of conspiring to prevent another family member from testifying against Manson. She pleaded “no contest” to reduced charges and was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

The plot involved giving a witness, Barbara Hoyt, a hamburger laced with LSD in Honolulu.

Fromme also was arrested in connection with aiding the escape of a family member jailed for a robbery but that charge was dropped.

Still later, she was jailed for contempt of court for refusing to take the witness stand and answer questions without causing a disruption in another court proceeding.

She had been called as a defense witness in the penalty phase of Manson’s trial for the slayings of Gary Hinman and Donald (Shorty) Shea.

But her most serious trouble was yet to come. In 1972, Fromme was charged with murder, along with four companions, in the Stockton slaying of 19-year-old Lauren Chavelle Willett.

The victim’s body had been buried in a basement. The headless body of the victim’s husband, ex-Marine James Willett, 26, had been unearthed shortly before in Sonoma County.

But after spending nearly three months in jail as a suspect in the Stockton murder and a Granada Hills robbery, Fromme was cleared of both charges and freed.

While testifying in Manson’s behalf, Fromme said she was one of the first girls to join the family, only months after Manson was released from prison in 1967.

She had come from a well-to-do Santa Monica family. Her father was an aeronautical engineer. She attended El Camino College for a time but dropped out.

She testified that life with Manson was an existence without rules, a timeless game of make-believe and love.

“Charlie is in love with love and I’m in love with love and so we are in love with each other,” she explained.

Telling of life with the Manson family on the Spahn movie ranch in Chatsworth and in Death Valley, Fromme said: “When you don’t have any philosophy you don’t have any rules. You might call that an Alice in Wonderland world but it makes sense. You get what you put out.”

Red-haired and freckled, Fromme was plain looking with a tiny voice from which the “Squeaky” nickname derived. She indicated this played a part in her unhappy life at home.

But her new life began one day when she was sitting in the street crying and Manson offered to take her with him, she recalled.

“A man walked up and said, ‘Your father kicked you out today,’ and that was Charlie,” she said. “No one had ever treated me like that before, not pushed me around, so I just picked up all my things and went.”

But why, of all people, someone like Manson?

“A dog goes to somebody who loves it and takes care of it,” she explained.

wrote & I got it the same day yours came. He wanted to know my birthday also. Does that mean anything to you?

It meant to me that I had to write another letter that couldn’t get too real or it would be misunderstood.
I can’t help you with your school report. Earth cries and you want my birthdate. If the report had something to do with survival when the money reality falls, you wouldn’t know what to write because the money mom holds the leash & the reigns—mom earth is under her trampling discontent—Look at the Big Bitch selling pieces of Air, Land, Water & her children’s asses

And you people look down at me.

When you are gasping for air we’ll see who is hysterical.

I’m not fighting for a cause. I’m fighting for my life, trapped by my own knowing. (The soul is it’s own reward). But you sit back and enjoy your T.V. life a little longer.

Don’t let your personality fool you into being offended. Personalities & words are just clothes. I really don’t play that birthday game.

A note on this letter.  This letter, originally handwritten, covered two pages, the second of which appeared in Nikolas Schreck’s excellent book, The Manson File, published by Amok in 1989. To see the second page as it was reproduced by Schreck,

Letter 2/12

2/12

5 pages enclosed expressing current feelings & statements ranging from 1970— recently. The final 2 pages I wrote as frontispiece to a story a magazine wanted to use. We decided later against allowing them to make money off of us. The book was a large paperback w/ contributions from numerous writers. Manson said that he might have given me some encouragement on that project, but I think that what the publishers did put in the book was far better than the story I had written. (They reprinted in the book part of a magazine article about him that was good).

I’m wondering about sending all material I have, if I do decide to contribute, to Boyd since he’s to be the editor of the proposed book. I’ve sent him copies of these 5 pages. He can make copies, tho his $ is scarce.

I sent you a letter of mine and one of CM recently. You should have it by now. Please copy his letter for me. I liked it & I wanted to re-read it, however I’d kept it for long enough & thought I best mail it.

Thanks for the ph. # & letter etc duplicates to send on. I dreamt of taking out “The Crawl” about the 70 mile Sunset Blvd. experience 5 of us had crawling to the Hall of Justice where Manson was held in L.A. It ends with us being snubbed by the press after 7 full days on our hands & knees (& numerous experiences behind us that I only can allude to in a frightened story). (I’m not a writer but I can play thoughts—yet it’s not enough to meet my own standards). Still I’ll see what it looks like. Oh! I started to say —it ends with us sitting on the sidewalk, wrapping out bruised, scabbing bloody knees & cleaning our grubby hands w/ alcohol just as the sun is getting hot & the prosecutor in his 3pc. tweed suit meets us on his way to work. Always dapper & snappy he greets us as if meeting us for a luncheon recipe.

“Hi girls,” he says (and w/o flinching) “what’re you doing?” Brenda looked up & told him we were trying to wake a few people up.

“You’ll never do it that way” he said, shaking his head. “You’ll have to put a bomb at their feet.” And with that he was off, said he’d be late—to the prosecution of our friends for mass murder, & though his may sound like the wisest words, being as we thought 9 dead bodies would be enough, I recall vividly the bitter irony through the smoggy sunlight & our weariness and I’m surprised we’ve lasted this long in the pursuit of peaceful change except for our unwillingness to run amok. It wasn’t suicide we wanted but the burial of dead systems of thought.

P.S.
As for “Manson’s right wing revolutionary cause”, I believe that if Manson had wings he’d have at least two of them and a substantial body of his soul self in the center.

—And a couple of articles
We’d like to read The Lightening & The Sun—Can receive books anytime w/o prior approval—should be sent from any type of book store or established seller or religious place.

NOV. 10

1.  My action in court Friday was not a frivolous disruption but a rational commitment based on principle.
2.  The results of this trial specifically hinge on my intent.
3.  I went to the Capitol and came to court specifically to draw attention to the problems of the world that directly affect my state of mind and my physical body and to offer a way to clean up the world. This is my intent.
4.  I do not have the answers and as a woman I do not intend to play my own thoughts over the truth. I can clearly state the problems and tell you that I suffer from them.
I feel that symbolically I am the earth and with relief I would hear Manson give the answers as he and the family would have had they had the chance to put on their defense. Their defense is my defense. I can*t go to trial without them.
5.  Letting the family speak in my defense is the only way we will be able to clean up this world—I PUT MY LIFE ON IT.

Statement for the Record

Statement for the Record

To the matter of defense:

The court has stated repeatedly that the case is to be tried based on the facts in evidence; that the defendant will not be permitted to make any political statements, nor to use the court room as a forum for talking about such “ecology” issues as endangered redwood trees, nuclear power plants, polluted air and water.

I have talked late into the nights with my client (me), affirming my original position in defense. I have taken into consideration the court’s warnings—and most importantly, the reasons behind these warnings, and I wish at this time to let response to the earlier warnings of the court be known.

* Let the record reflect

*      that this defendant is not charged with the murder of the President; that the charge is “attempted assassination”,

*      that it is this defendant’s understanding that the U.S. Attorney must prove beyond doubt that the defendant intended “knowingly and wilfully” to murder the President,

*      that intent is very clearly a state of mind; that intent is a THOUGHT before and during an ACTION; that the inquiry of such may well open the defendant’s mind for scrutiny; and that the defendant’s state of mind may be directly concerned with such social matters as the court has deemed unfit for court consumption.

In order of due process

Circa 4 Nov., 1975

In order of due process

I am sincere in telling the court that I have only one chance for the defense of myself, the man and the country. I am telling the court that the problems of the country left for the young people to solve are directly concerning my intent on September 5, 1975. I am telling the court that nobody will really know what my intent was unless I testify, unless I give witness to my state of mind. Circumstantial evidence is not a live witness. I want the court to notice that the condition of the United States is most clearly related to Mr Ford the President and to my intent and that to refuse to allow me to present my intent, is to leave me without defense and therefore condemned. The defense has the right to put on the witnesses that will exculpate the defendant-ie take away the guilt. Denial of this right makes “fair trial” just two words.
I am co-counsel and as co-counsel I have the right to represent myself, speak for myself and conduct myself and my trial by myself in my best interests in order of due process.
I fire John Virga as part of my defense. Manson is the only one that can speak for me.
You will not by law, run this trial without me just because the attorney thinks its a good idea. You do note that I am one half of this defense and have already put in my record a clause about moving without my permission which would automatically sever my co-counsel.
I cannot be tried without me. I will not watch your T.V. behind the court room until you put my defense on it. (Manson and all the family). The Red robe belongs to that family. I can go to trial or wear this robe only with their permission. They did not get a defense. Nixson claimed them guilty “directly or indirectly” They did not have a voice in the court room.
I came here to make you aware of that, and to put my life up in their will as it once was. I want to go wherever they go. I cant possibly speak for them as they have layed six years under the worlds guilt and judgements for Nixson’s “Guilty, directly or indirectly.” They have spent years in solitude and have been shown no care of concern by the very communities that raised them. Soon the television will try to sell you the death that you fostered- everyone of you whose will it is to let the world and your air, waters, lands and wildlife die. I dont have the answers. Manson is the only chance to live I have.

In order of due process
I am co-counsel and as co-counsel I have the right to represent myself, speak for myself and conduct myself and my trial by myself in my best interests and the interests of my family. (What they want me to do, I’ll do.) The red robe is their sacrifice. I cannot wear it without their permission. I cannot go to trial as they were not given a fair trial. I came here to plead for the lives of my family, my children and the earth- my plea was innocent.

Letter to Governor Brown

Lynette A. Fromme
620 H Street
Sacramento, California 95314

October 7, 1975

Governor Brown,

Just because you’re between a rock & a hard spot doesn’t mean you will be allowed to make your bed with the money interests & compromise the body of the rest of the world by accepting the suggestion of those who insist we need nuclear power plants.

Your excuses mean nothing, and there are five thousand women who, if threatened enough will show you what motherhood means. Do you understand me?

WE DO NOT NEED NUCLEAR POWER. We need clean air, water & land. We need the OZONE & the SUN. We need to legislate with only the BALANCE OF EARTH in mind.

There are thousands of jobs that NEED to be done & they don’t involve RADIOACTIVE WASTE.

You are not showing wisdom as California’s leading example. Your plans are not based on an overall knowing, nor do they reflect a will to live. You are pushed by fringe constituents that have the rest of the people bound & gagged with money.

We are not interested in money. We want the good life it is supposed to buy. If you are not bright enough to see there IS a workable alternative to Nuclear Power your name will be—Plutonum & you will need to be buried for the next hundred years.

Lynette A. Fromme

P.S.

My strength is in this letter of conviction. If I could lay on my face before you, & beg, if it would move you to stop, I would. But your own lord hangs before you on a cross to say the very same thing. He already died to save it. He’s not going to die forever.

Letter August 2, 1975

L. Fromme/S. Good
1725 P Street
Sacramento, Cal. 95814

August 2, 1975

Dear Mr. Rossie,

A year ago you wrote Charles Manson asking if you might interview him at Folsom prison. He sent the letters to us.

I am enclosing a double sided statement concerning both Nixon and what will happen to Los Angeles, even as I find it unlikely that you will use or pass this grim warning.

I am certain that you could find in history men with as strange and mystical, individual and yet all-encompassing qualities as Manson, if one could only think to compare. A braver (real) man would take a good long look at a phenomenon to see not what others think or fear about it—but WHAT IS. This is difficult for the schooled mind to see, and you are to be respected for trying, not by me or anyone, but by yourself.

Through the images set out for us by the unknown called leaders with enough financial backing to take a step forward/whip-lashing suddenly at that certain point in time when fashion swung to the revolution—the American mind is left blocked by dozens of already tried solutions, to the OVERALL problems, that have fizzled. Nevertheless, the thoughts are still moving.

It was not people that the Manson Family was at war with, but a thought. The same thought sells our children and our more important world sex, political ideology, death, theology, and toothpaste in one hour. As a member of the media, it is your responsibility to take into consideration the thoughts that the Manson Family has presented to you. We will not, for the sake of drama, and an old school of thought where the misery needs company and the subtitles of emotions and treasures of a writer’s hard work, accept Tennessee Williams for lifestyle. To perpetuate what is dead is killing the rest. There is—around the corner of evolution—a new experience, awareness and perception beyond anything we have yet experienced—and this itself is so feared that it has been locked up. The death of an old thought is the completion of a long line of grandmother’s ways, and hard for most to let go of.

The media CAN be used to unwind the tangles of a world running in circles toward what it fears most.

Manson can explain the self destructive thought. He can explain the Christ thought.

Without personal meanness, I say that YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND THE MIND OF THE WORLD into which you pass THOUGHTS. The leaders who have held the people down in order to control have fallen off the top and as the people are waking to the lie, in anger, they will tear the world apart with no new purpose to live. With the media, each new home can learn a garden, and woman can be shown not as a whore or a neuter computer, but as a mother who WANTS TO LIVE AND IS DOING EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN TO INSURE [sic] THE SURVIVAL OF HER WORLD. YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THE CHRIST THOUGHT FIRST. I CANNOT EXPLAIN IT, BUT IT WOULD FASCINATE YOU! LOVE IN TRUTH IS WORSHIP—AND BEGINS WITH WORSHIP OF THE EARTH WE WALK ON, THE AIR WE BREATHE, THE WATER WE DRINK AND SO ON. THE COUNTRY HAS THE RESOURCES AND THE YOUNG AND OLD ENERGY ALIKE TO CLEAN IT UP AND PROVIDE NEW PURPOSE FOR LIVING, NEW THOUGHTS THAT SEND A MIND SPIRALING UPWARD AND OUTWARD, NOT INTO THE DRUG STORES, BOOZE BOTTLES AND MORGUES.

BUT WILL THE TATE-LABIANCA MURDERS NEED TO BE REPEATED TO TELL THE TRUTH OF THE THOUGHTS WE HAVE BEEN RAISED INTO? OR WILL THE PEOPLE FINALLY SEE THAT THEY ARE BEING KILLED BY BIG MONEY AND THE THOUGHTS THAT ARE PEPPER IT AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE NEW YOUNG GOVERNMENT OF THE WORLD? WILL THERE BE BLOOD IN THE FACES OF OUR WORKING PEOPLE, OR WILL TWENTY MILLION MOTHER BEARS ARISE TO PROTECT THEIR CUBS?

WOMAN WILL NEED TO SIT DOWN WITH HER MEN AND UNDERSTAND THEM AS PARTS OF HERSELF. TO COMPETE WITH EACH OTHER IS TO CREATE CONFLICT IN THE KIDS AND LEAVE THE REAL PROBLEMS OF NO PLACE TO PLAY, NO TREES, BAD AIR, WATER, AND CANCER CAUSING FOODS—ON THE SIDEWALKS WITH THE TWELVE AND THIRTEEN YEAR OLDS WHO LEARNED IN THEIR DOPE PREVENTION CLASS HOW NOT TO SHOOT DOPE AND ARE LAUGHING ABOUT IT WITH NEEDLES IN THEIR ARMS.

HOW MANY OF OUR KIDS WENT TO THE NUT HOUSES ACROSS THE COUNTRY JUST BECAUSE THEY SAW THE CONCRETE BILLBOARD CANCER REALITY KILLING THE WORLD AND THEY COULD NOT COPE? WOULD YOU OR I GIVE UP OUR LIVES TO STOP THE WORLD FROM BURNING? THINK ABOUT IT.

CHARLES MANSON, BRUCE DAVIS, STEVE GROGAN, ROBERT BEAUSOLEIL, CHARLES WATSON, PATRICIA KRENWINKLE [sic], LESLIE VAN HOUTEN AND SUSAN ATKINS DID. PUT NIXON AND THE POPE IN A COURT ROOM WITH MANSON AND FAMILY AND WE WILL SEE WHAT HAS BEEN RUNNING OUR IGNORANCES, WHAT TRUTH HAS BEEN KEPT IN CLOSETS. AND WE WHO ARE THE REAL SERVANTS OF THE PEOPLE AND EARTH.

THE TRUTH IS AS BAD AS IT IS GOOD. MANSON CAN EXPLAIN IT. IF NOT ALLOWED TO EXPLAIN, THERE WILL BE MANY MORE YOUNG MURDERERS, BEGINNING WITH THE PERSON TYPING THIS LETTER. YOU DO NOT REALIZE ALL THE THOUGHTS THAT ARE MOVING IN THE MINDS OF NOT ONLY THIS COUNTRY, BUT THE WORLD. MANSON HAS BEEN THINKING THROUGH THE WORLD FOR FIVE YEARS IN THAT CLOSET. HE HAS BEEN UNDER THE SUN THREE TIMES IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS. FOR THOSE OF US OUTSIDE TO IMAGINE THIS WOULD BE HARD. WHAT MAN COULD BE IN A CELL WITH NOTHING TO DO AND ALL THE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS OF THE WORLD ON HIS BACK, WITH EVERY REACH OF COMPETITION TRYING WITH SHARP NAILS TO PICK HIS BRAIN, AND DOWN HIM, SO THAT THEY, HIM, HER, MS., IT CAN BE HIM—WHAT MAN OF CLEAR AWARENESS AND PERCEPTION OF THOUGHTS BEYOND MOST MEN’S MINDS, PAST OR PRESENT, COULD KNOW WHAT PEOPLE ARE REALLY THINKING, ACCEPT THEM WITHOUT JUDGMENT, YET REFLECT THEIR OWN JUDGMENTS OF THEMSELVES IN TRUTH FOR THEIR OWN BALANCE AND SIGHT, OFTEN TO HIS OWN DETREMENT? IT IS AN EXCEPTIONAL MAN WHO TELLS IS THE TRUTH THAT OTHERS DO NOT WANT US TO HEAR. THOSE OF US NOT EXCEPTIONAL, CAUGHT UP IN FOOLISH FORMALITIES SIGNIFYING NOTHING, MAY LEARN TO FACE OURSELVES THROUGH HIM—BUT ONLY WHILE HE LIVES. IF HE DIES, THE TRUTH ALONG WITH HIM DIES. THERE ARE MANY CHILDREN WITH KNIVES WHO LOVE THE EARTH AND PUT THEIR VERY LIVES ON HIS NAME, PLEDGING NOT TO ALLOW THIS.

THE ALWAYS NICE FACE WILL NOT GIVE YOU THE MEANNESS THAT MAY RAISE YOUR STRENGTH AND HELP YOU TO SURVIVE. THE GIFT OF THE MEAN, HARD TRUTH CAN SAVE LIVES IF WE BUT ACCEPT IT AS A PART OF THE THOUGHTS THAT ARE MOVING. IF NOT IT IS BLOODY BEDROOMS AND SCREAMS IN THE NIGHT, UNANSWERED. AS IS, YOU ARE MAKING MURDERERS FOR THE SPRAY CAN COMPANY THAT IS GOING TO KILL US IF SOMEBODY DOES NOT GET ALPLANALP AND HIS CRIME PARTNERS FIRST.

IF NIXON CAN STEAL THE COUNTRY, AND SELL IT OUT THE BACK DOOR WHILE THE C.I.A. TRACKS BLOOD ALL OVER THE WORLD AND THE POPE SHAKES HANDS ON THE DEAL—WHAT IS JOE GONZALES DOING IN JAIL FOR STEALING BREAD? WHY IS GEORGE BROWN GOING TO PRISON FOR DOPE? WHY DID SYLVIA KILL HER MOTHER? WHY DID PAT KRENWINKLE [sic], LESLIE VAN HOUTEN, SUSAN ATKINS, CHARLES WATSON, ROBERT BEAUSOLEIL, STEPHEN GROGAN [sic], AND BRUCE DAVIS KILL NINE PEOPLE? WHY DID CHARLES MANSON GET LIFE IN PRISON FOR TELLING THE TRUTH? MANSON CAN EXPLAIN IT. IN A COURT ROOM WITH NIXON, AND THE POPE—THE WORLD WOULD KNOW WHY.

Lyn Fromme

P.S. C.M. could have gotten out if he would have lied. He doesn’t lie. Bugliosi on the other hand lies and makes thousands of dollars, while campaigning on T.V. shows and saying that Charles Manson is at home in prison, having a great time playing his guitar and he’s queer anyway. (Sixteen to twenty women should surely testitfy to that.)

Sandra and myself would like to sit down next to Bugliosi on one of his talk shows, under the right circumstances. Why don’t you give me your thoughts on the best spot for this. I felt that CBS would be the most fair in the editing room. We do not know the various shows where such a confrontation would be possible.
